MOT scrapped for pre s vehicles Back in November we reported that this was on the cards, and now it’s official. From 18th November , the UK MOT annual inspection test will be scrapped for vehicles manufactured before , unless used for hire and reward carrying paying passengers. The reason is simple: That’s the opinion of Mike Penning, Roads Minister. So until 18th November, classic owners will be obliged to have MOT tests as and when due—assuming the vehicle is to be used on the roads. But after that date, it’s all over. It means that collecting that free “road tax” disc from the post office, or even applying for it online, will be just that little bit more straightforward.

These are trying times for American families and hipster road bikers. Anyway, the bottom line is this: That subjective rating is then divided by the price of the bike. Unfortunately, practically every roadie on earth is riding a bike with a CPD of well under 1 right now! This must be stopped.

Locating the Serial Number – Chicago built Schwinn serial numbers are found on the left rear axle-hanger or fork-end on the frame. If letters were used for date codes, they skipped the letters “I” and “O” as they looked too much like numbers. This scheme is for all Chicago built non-Paramount models excluding Superiors and Super Sports whose serial numbers are located on the left rear axle hanger and consist of a single letter code for the month [again, skip"I” and"O”], the last digit of the year and a 3-digit sequential build number — e.

The Super Sports with Huret dropouts seem to have used a two digit year ‘C ‘ — March, , th frame. The Le Tour and Super Le Tour models had their serial numbers on the left rear axle hanger and many began with an ‘S’, followed by the Japan Made numbering system. The number will have a production month letter in either the first or second position and a production year number in the other first or second position. Beginning in the s, many Schwinns feature a 4-digit stamp on the head badge that represents the assembly date and consists of the Julian day and the last digit of the year decodes to the th day of or — use decals and components to determine the decade.

Japanese bicycles are often of very fine quality, but few are available in the U.S. market today, due to unfavorable currency exchange rates. There are still many very fine Japanese bicycles available on the used market, and this article is intended as a guide to them.

Although the Sports Model was the original backbone of the range, it was the Raleigh 20 which really set the sales records. Slightly cruder than the original Nottingham version, the 20 was nevertheless a sturdy machine which suffered very few problems over its long production life. It was made of local steel, and the main tube was of slightly smaller diameter than the original. In another departure, the bracing tubes from the main tube to the bottom bracket were missing.

This last feature allowed the production of a fully detachable version which was, I think, unique to NZ. The bike originally came fitted with the usual Raleigh equipment: Also fitted was a wiring system for dynamo lights, which ran through the main tube and through copper contact plates at the shotgun style joint. I modified mine to 20 x 1. The bike has been transformed, and is now very nippy, thanks to the full pound each wheel has shed!

Cable splitting is yet to be tackled. Keith Guthrie of Cycle Trading Co found the following letter in his files. Note that this letter refers the Folder and not the Detachable, it is closer in format to the original Raleigh 20 Folder from Nottingham, but still without the BB reinforcing bars.

From to , Schwinn pioneered its own models of cruisers, touring bikes and three-speeds, fabricating their own frames and components in-house. After the “Bicycle Boom” of the s, however, Schwinn’s proprietary frame-building technology and heavier bikes became less economically viable in an increasingly weight-obsessed industry–resulting in millions of unique vintage and antique bikes that can be identified by their serial numbers.

Dating these bikes is usually the first step toward proper appraisal of a vintage Schwinn machine.

Cycles Aiglon Catalog, s 20 pages, beautifully designed brochure of this Paris bike maker’s complete line (thirteen models) of bikes. Three additional color pages of the racing and touring bikes scanned and enlarged.

Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made.

Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps.

Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality. Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Don’t all cyclists have boxes and boxes of old components in their garage? Most early Treks through about were sold as framesets.

If you want professional, accurate information, instead of amateur guessing, here is where you get it. But the biggest mistake that people make is they listen to DIY’ers and presume they can diagnose their own serial numbers in a snap. And they are usually wrong. It requires a lot of study and at least some expertise. And it is extremely rare that a model number or a serial number was used for one year and one year only.

And forget “using the Schwinn format” or going by the name that is on the bicycle.

Included in this purchase are the ownership of the Excelsior-Henderson brand name, 10 federally registered trademarks, web domains, previous motorcycle frame and engine designs as well as 18 expired patents that can only be effectively exploited by the owner of Excelsior-Henderson. For a time, they were the last men standing in the American motorcycle industry: Excelsior-Henderson, Harley-Davidson and Indian.

They fought hard on the dirt tracks, race tracks, hill climbs and sales floors, and in their s heyday, the competition between the Big 3 made for the most exciting racing anyone had ever seen between the fastest and most advanced racing bikes in the world. Sales-floor competition made each company improve its products dramatically, and by the late s, it was Excelsior-Henderson and Indian that dominated the 45 CI cc market with the Super X and Scout models.

Their big models—the Henderson Four as well as the Indian Chief and Four—were admired the world over, and were in many ways the most attractive and technically interesting motorcycles built in the U. Their sales figures after October 29, , were dismal, and instead of selling tens of thousands of motorcycles toward the end of , they sold bikes by the tens and hundreds, while unsold stock languished in distribution warehouses.

I needed daycare and I needed a shower. My new mom friends invited me to take spin classes with them, but between the coaches shouting out mysterious numbers and the coordination involved, I kindly declined; spin was more than my foggy-mom brain could handle at the time, so I stuck to my elliptical, yoga, and Zumba classes. By the time my son learned to love the gym, I was pregnant with baby 2.

Luckily, my little girl eased into daycare and I soon realized after taking my first spin class that I had been missing out: At this same time, the condo I lived in had redesigned its gym, and I convinced management to add a spin bike.

This particular one was purchased by Giles, the previous owner, about 15 years ago from a Copenhagen shipyard that had closed down. He says they had of them there. In the mid-fifties, they also made Sachs-powered SCO autocycles. Urania was one of many companies that manufactured Long Johns. Urania Cykler is still a major bicycle company in Denmark. The J suffix makes it a model. But the Long John is ideal for fitting a box and car seat in its cargo area.
